King County’s Equitable Development Program
Contact: Yasmeen Perez, Equitable Development Program Manager
This program is brand new and will be advancing strategies for equitable development, anti-displacement, and community driven development through capacity building, technical support, and policy work. We are still building out the scope of the program so stay tuned for future opportunities to work together. For now, it would be fantastic to connect to community based organizations and leaders in King County led by and for communities most impacted by lack of housing affordability and displacement. I’m especially interested in connecting with groups in south King where light rail is expanding and groups in unincorporated areas. You can reach me Yasmeen Perez, Equitable Development Program Manager at yaperez@kingcounty.gov.
BASE - Real Estate Cohort for Cultural Spaces
Contact: Matthew Richter, Cultural Space Liaison | Seattle Office of Arts & Culture Matthew.Richter@seattle.gov
The BASE (Build Art Space Equitably Certification Cohort) program’s goal is to build capacity in communities of color to build permanent affordable cultural spaces and to extend the “onramp” to commercial real estate development further into cultural communities. It has already graduated its first year’s cohort and is in the process of launching the second year’s curriculum. It has attracted attention from across the country. It has fostered direct collaborations within the first year’s group. It has injected cultural space into formerly fully commercial projects. It is creating an army, and that army has taken up the fight.
Community Real Estate Stewardship Learning Circle
Contact: Kayla Jackson, CREST Program Manager | Puget Sound Sage
Over 9 monthly sessions, the Com un munity Real Estate Stewardship Team (CREST) cohort will collectively learn about displacement, the regional impact to our communities, and how community-driven development models have been successful in stabilizing low-income communities and communities of color. We hope that participants will walk away with increased knowledge about how to do community-driven development themselves, as well as identify the systems change needed for a community-driven development strategy to achieve a scale of land stewardship that ensures speculation and gentrification won’t sweep away whole communities.

Equitable Development Zoning
Contact: Stephanie Velasco
Many faith-based communities own land in Seattle, and several congregations have expressed interest in developing affordable housing on their land. City staff are developing a policy that grants religious organizations an increased density bonus if they intend to develop affordable housing on their property. If you are interested in learning more, providing feedback, or helping think through this proposed zoning policy, please contact Stephanie Velasco.
