Upcoming Learning Community events & opportunities for June!
Real Estate 102
Join COO, Seattle's Equitable Development Initiative (EDI), and the National Development Council (NDC) for Real Estate 102 - a three day training to deepen knowledge & skills around equitable development. Real Estate Development 102 examines what you need to know about Land, Program, and Money before assembling your development team. By understanding the interplay between these elements, participants will be equipped to determine what type of site they need, predict how their program will generate income, and know what they can afford to purchase and develop.
This three-day training will explore the following topics:
Sequence of real estate development
Credit analysis
Land valuation and appraisal
Funding construction and operations
Development partnerships
The trainings will take place from 12 - 3 pm on Tuesday, June 8 through Thursday, June 10th. The trainings and materials will build on each other so it is ideal if participants can attend all three days.
There are no pre-requisite courses required to attend this workshop.

New Workshops - Racism as a Public Health Crisis: What is the Role of Data?
Learn more about the role of data in naming racism as a public health crisis and how data can be used to address that crisis. This virtual workshop will be held on two days, on Thursday, Jun 3 from 2:00 - 3:30, and on Thursday, June 10 from 10:00 - 11:30.
We’ll host a dialogue about the role of data in naming racism as a public health crisis and how data can be used to address the crisis. Join us to share your thoughts on:
How can we change the legacy of data being used “against” communities?
How can data be used to address racism?
What additional data, tools, or resources do you wish you had to address the impacts of racism? How can we change current data practices to meet these needs?
What does data justice look like?
Discussion and activities will be hosted by Communities Count. We’ll share a presentation that spotlights local inequities and examples of underlying systems and policies that contribute to them before moving into dialogue.

In this two-part workshop series, participants will learn about the basics of turning program data into stories. This series is designed for any staff looking to highlight their accomplishments through storytelling whether sharing stories with community, clients, donors, or funders. The first workshop will provide hands-on activities covering best practices and frameworks for creating compelling stories with data using different sources of information (e.g. survey data, interviews, focus groups, etc.). The second workshop will be an applied experience, building on the frameworks introduced in the first workshop. Each workshop will be two hours with some suggested pre-work between workshops one and two.
This workshop series is provided by Cardea Services and is free to all Best Starts for Kids partners. Registration is limited to ensure everyone has a chance to actively participate. If there’s a lot of interest and we’re not able to accommodate everyone who’d like to participate, we’ll plan on repeating the series soon. Contact Sara Jaye Sanford at sjsanford@kingcounty.gov with any questions!
